Job Description:

To provide support to the educational needs and pathology curriculum of the University by overseeing, developing and scheduling curriculum requirements for medical students. To assist the Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs and the Chair, Department of Pathology as directed. Description of Duties & Tasks
  1. Establish and maintain an active research program in their area of expertise either clinical, bench or educational instruction.
  2. Responsible for establishing curriculum, subject matter and methods of instruction and those aspects of student life which relate to the educational process.
  3. Promote, by precept and example, a general atmosphere within the College of respect for life, knowledge, thought and inquiry.
  4. The faculty member has the right and obligation to participate in scheduled meetings of the General Faculty. Election to the Faculty Council and election or appointment to committees should be considered a privilege and faculty members are encouraged to share in these responsibilities.
  5. Contribute to the planning, development and evaluation of courses and academic programs within the College.
General Statement of Responsibilities
  1. Responsible to maintain intellectual integrity and to strive for academic excellence in his/her teaching.
  2. At the beginning of each course, provide students with a syllabus indicating materials to be covered, related assignments and methods of evaluation.
  3. Responsible for promoting adequate standards of linguistic expression in writing and speech.
  4. Maintain up-to-date records of the grades of each student enrolled in his/her classes.
  5. Have on file in the appropriate office an outline and list of goals and objectives for each lecture.
  6. While teaching in a specific system, the faculty member is responsible to the coordinator of that system in the planning, teaching, grading and evaluation of the system.
  7. Effectively carry out lecture, laboratory, seminar and/or clinical assignments and responsibilities.
  8. Independently design and present a course or a series of integrated lectures.
  9. Prepare examination questions as well as grade a course or a portion of a course.
  10. Responsible for meeting classes according to the published schedule.
  11. Must be readily accessible to students for consultation.
  12. During the system, perform the following: introduce the system to the class before the first lecture including explanation of the lecture sequence, rationale of the sequence, introduction of new faculty, role of the coordinators and examination schedule. Monitor the content and proceedings of the system, meet with the student representatives, relay information to the class and introduce the class visiting lecturers. In the area of examinations, the coordinators shall coordinate, review, schedule and grade examinations. The system coordinators will plan the system by meeting with the instructors.
  13. Each faculty member will be assigned an appropriate number of advisees. The faculty member will advise students regarding curriculum issues and graduation requirements.
  14. Faculty members have an obligation to attend scheduled faculty meetings and elected or appointed committee meetings whenever possible.
  15. The faculty is encouraged to provide service to the College and the Community.
  16. Student Club Advisement. Faculty advisors to student clubs serve as liaison with the Administration. They are to serve as consultants in the development of the organization's programs for each academic year. It is the faculty advisor's responsibility to see that a written summary of the year's accomplishments, including a financial report, is forwarded to the Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs/Dean of Osteopathic Medicine at the close of each academic year.
  17. Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Skills: Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
  1. Expertise in the area of Pathology.
  2. Ability to organize, maintain and develop gross and microscopic pathology images. Also to proctor anatomy laboratory in order to discuss, review, and archive interesting pathologic findings for detailed case presentation.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively to either groups or individually.
  4. Ability to effectively interact with people of all backgrounds, including students, administration, faculty and staff.
  5. Ability to handle detail-oriented assignments and maintain confidentiality.
  6. Ability to handle a multitude of responsibilities in the College environment.
Qualification Standards
  1. EDUCATION: D.O. or M.D.
  2. EXPERIENCE: Residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Preferably long-term experience in the Clinical Practice of Pathology and Medicine.
  3. LICENSURE: California Osteopathic Medical Board or California Medical Board of Quality Assurance
  4. BOARD CERTIFICATION: American Board or American Osteopathic Board of Pathologists.
  5. PREFERENCES: Preference will be given to those individuals possessing experience teaching in a medical institution. A commitment and dedication of high standards to education at every level, medical student and resident education, enthusiasm regarding innovation and performance excellence are all highly desirable
