Description:

 


The Department Chair of Pharmaceutical Sciences coordinates activities related to the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Chair provides guidance to the Faculty in the department in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and research. The Chair also identifies and conducts activities consistent with the mission, goals and objectives of the College of Pharmacy, Western University of Health Sciences.
Description of Duties & Tasks

 


 


A. Academic functions

 




  1. Assists in fostering and developing collaborative opportunities for faculty members within and outside of the College/University



  2. Provides guidance to junior faculty in procurement of extramural funds and establishment of a research program.



  3. Meets regularly with faculty members to provide guidance and support with issues related to their teaching, scholarship, research and service responsibilities.



  4. Supports and maintains a quality graduate education program in pharmaceutical sciences.



  5. Teaches in the didactic and elective portions of the curriculum as appropriate.



  6. Develops and maintains an independent, extramurally funded research program.



  7. Serves on committees in the College of Pharmacy and the University.



  8. Represents the College of Pharmacy at various meetings involving professional associations, governmental agencies, pharmaceutical companies, etc.



  9. Identifies and recommends programs to the Faculty Orientation and Development Committee to assist faculty in the areas of education, research and scholarly activity.



 


B. Administrative functions


  1. Administers the budget of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Coordinates the prioritization scheme for purchases of research equipment and allocation of internal research funds.



  2. Develops and maintains policies and procedures for the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.



  3. Participates in the hiring of faculty and staff.



  4. Ensures appropriate workload assignments to the Department faculty. Tracks teaching workload and schedules teaching responsibilities to ensure equitable division of labor in this area between faculty members.



  5. Collaborates with the Dean of the Graduate College and the Director of Graduate Education in the administration of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Program.



  6. Assists departmental Faculty in the development of their distribution of effort plans. Ensures Department faculty complete their annual plans in a timely manner.



  7. Conducts annual performance evaluations of the Department Faculty and participates in the annual review of the College of Pharmacy administrators and staff.



  8. Represents the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences on the Dean's Council of the College of Pharmacy.



  9. Performs other duties and projects as assigned by the Dean of the College of Pharmacy.



 


 


C. Reporting mechanisms:

 


Reports to the Dean of the College of Pharmacy for matters relevant to the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.





 


Skills:

The Individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential job functions.




  1. Ability to communicate and interact effectively with administration, faculty, staff, students, and outside contacts.



  2. Ability to exert leadership in policy and procedure development, implementation and reinforcement.



  3. Advanced knowledge in teaching, research and administration.



  4. Ability to handle detail-oriented assignments.



  5. Ability to maintain confidentiality.



  6. Excellent organizational skills necessary to prioritize workload and delegate responsibility.



  7. Advanced management skills to direct a constant and efficient flow of the Department.



Qualification Standards




  1. EDUCATION: An earned Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacology, Medicinal Chemistry or related discipline.



  2. EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 8 years experience in academia with demonstrated skills in leadership and management. Must be eligible for appointment as a tenured associate or full professor. Should have a strong record of scholarship with history of NIH or other extramural competitive grant funding.



  3. PREFERENCES: Preference will be given to individuals with experience in a pharmaceutical education environment.
