Description:
This exempt position reports directly to the President of Charles Drew University and is responsible for all aspects of the University’s media and communications programs. Develops and leads a team of experienced communications professionals (staff and consultants) in planning and implementing an effective, ongoing communications and publicity function that promotes the mission of the Institution consistently and clearly. Advises the senior team on all strategic issues, including media relations and stakeholder communication. Promotes the vision and mission of CDU by developing and publishing University newsletter, web site, brochures, annual report, press releases. Reports on research developments, promotes community partnerships and partners, promotes CDU community health programs, and highlights key faculty and staff. Promotes CDU’s role in assisting with underserved medical communities, especially South Los Angeles. Ensures clear communication with key audiences, including advocates, champions, NIH, scientific and academic communities, government officials and agencies, funding organizations, policy makers, corporations and media. Attends functions; holds press briefings and shepherds external contacts at CDU events.
Requirements:
BA in communications or related field required; at least 10 years of relevant experience including 5 years in technical and/or medical publicity and communications. Qualified candidates will have solid freelance and media connections. Able to travel; weekend and evening work required. Salary commensurate with experience. Candidates will be asked for a portfolio of previous work in electronic and print formats.
