Job Description:

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is seeking a talented Senior Director of Development with a proven record of success to further develop and direct the annual and planned giving, membership, special events production and corporate sponsorship, foundation and corporate gift relations and individual philanthropy divisions for the organization. This position provides strategic and operational leadership, vision, direction and oversight for GLAAD’s comprehensive development and fundraising efforts. The Senior Director of Development reports directly to the President and serves as a member of the President’s leadership team. GLAAD’s 2009 fundraising budget from all sources of revenue is $9.8M.


Responsibilities



  • Developing, overseeing and implementing comprehensive individual philanthropy, planned giving, membership (including online fundraising, events, telemarketing and direct mail), special events, corporate fundraising and foundation relations, and special campaigns



  • Strategizing, planning, directing and overseeing all private fund raising initiatives, including annual unrestricted and program operating support, as well as potential capital and endowment campaigns



  • Planning and executing significant growth strategy of annual fundraising



  • Directly managing, motivating, planning and executing with GLAAD’s Director of Corporate Relations and Special Events ($4 million), Director of Individual Philanthropy ($4 million), Associate Director of Foundation Relations ($1.6 million), and overall leadership and management of an approximate 18 person Development Department



  • Maintaining a proactive, creative leadership role in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of individual, membership and foundation support and creating a personal portfolio of significant relationships and support for GLAAD



  • Working with the President, Board of Directors and senior development staff to recruit and develop volunteer leadership to be engaged in fundraising activity



  • Developing the annual fundraising plan and detailed revenue and expense budget for presentation to the Board of Directors



  • Developing strategies for all annual fund donor cultivation, working with staff in public relations, messaging, and media programs



  • Working with Finance Department to assure utility of financial reports, creating dashboard of monthly measurements for success and goal attainment



  • Overseeing prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship; and building relationships amongst prospective donors and volunteers to support the program initiatives and development priorities of GLAAD



  • Ensure coordination with other senior leadership team members whose staff members provide information, resources and support for the development operations



  • The work of GLAAD resembles a campaign-style work environment; there is always a high level of energy, excitement and activity for everyone in the organization; preparing for the next events/activities to accomplish our important media advocacy work, fighting the defamation against the LGBT community and changing hearts and minds about our need for full equality. Staff members are expected to consciously and continuously promote the mission, values, programs, and impact of the organization when presented with opportunities for participating in membership development and reaching out to personal connections on behalf of GLAAD


Qualifications



  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree and/or equal amounts of work related experience

  • Required: 12+ years demonstrated successful fundraising experience, preferably within a national non-profit setting

  • Required: Demonstrated track record of successful philanthropic fundraising—meeting and/or exceeding fundraising revenue goals, maintaining successful relationships within all constituent groups, and successfully managing development expenses

  • Required: Senior-level experience including planning for, growing and managing a successful development program

  • Required: Experience working with Raiser’s Edge and experience in implementation of Raiser’s Edge system into an organization

  • Advanced degree preferred

  • Familiarity with and experience in strategic planning

  • Individual must been seen as expert in their field

  • Originality of thought and creative imagination with respect to approaches to development and fundraising activities

  • Capacity to succeed in a dynamic, complex and diverse environment

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills

  • Excellent negotiation and motivational skills

  • Team leader/player

  • Ability to market the organization and its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Media Advocacy and Anti-Defamation activities effectively

  • Action oriented with effective follow up

  • Ability to prioritize and make strategically appropriate decisions

  • Practical experience in common software applications

  • Ability to travel (25%)


Supervision


The Senior Director of Development reports to the President and has direct supervisory responsibilities of Director level staff members and overall responsibility for a staff of approximately 18 full time staff members.
