An opportunity is currently available for a Part-Time Instructional Companion
Qualifications: At least an A.A. degree or equivalent in psychology, education or related field, or training and/or education in implementing one-to-one discrete trial instruction to children challenged with autism, or one year of training and experience in providing discrete trial instruction in a one-to-one setting to children challenged with autism required.
Requirements: Valid Driver’s license; current automobile insurance; DMV report; first aid training; CPR training; TB clearance; fingerprint clearance through the California D.O.J and the FBI. Staff must be physically able to implement all strategies as they are defined in IABA’s “Emergency Management Guidelines,” including geographical and emergency physical containment. Staff must be able to physically lift and carry up to 20-pound items (e.g., groceries, houseware items, move furniture). As well as be able to physically assist, guide, and facilitate movement of consumers that may need physical assistance (e.g., wheelchair transfer, walking, etc.).
Training: The Instructional Companion will be expected to participate in approximately 90 hours of required training. The training will be completed during the first six months of employment. Training requirements include: Competency-based training, on-the-job field training, and other training provided by the professional staff of IABA and/or professionals outside the agency. To provide one-to-one behavioral-based instruction in the home, school and community to children within the autism spectrum to assist them to develop the skills necessary to be integrated into school and other community settings.
Responsibilities: The primary responsibility of the instructional companion is to provide one-to-one behavioral-based instruction to children in the Early & Intermediate Intervention Service. Responsibilities also include record keeping of each child’s progress toward goal’s and objectives, as well as behavior challenges, and assisting in training less experienced staff. Hours of work will be based on child’s intervention schedule.
Job Duties: Job duties will be as follows:
(1) Conduct scheduled one one-to-one behavioral-based instruction sessions, implementing the Individual Service Plan under the supervision of the Service Manager and/or Supervisor
(2) Assist in introduction of items/targets, as appropriate and according to the written protocol
(3) Keep accurate records of child’s progress and behavioral difficulties for each session conducted (4) Relate observations and suggestions to Senior Instructional Companion, Supervisor, or Service Manager
(5) Participate and contribute to weekly team meetings at office or child’s home
(6) Review and sign weekly team meeting notes
(7) Assist in training less experienced Instructional Companions on child’s team in behavioral techniques, intervention techniques, and professionalism as required
(8) Provide Service Manager with information regarding less experienced Instructional Companion’s performance, when requested
(9) Assist in maintaining child’s Service Notebook in a clear, up-to-date and organized manner
(10) Assist in maintaining intervention materials at the home and office in an organized manner
(11) Assist with intervention material generation, as requested
(12) Relay parental/guardian concerns or questions to Senior Instructional Companion, Supervisor, Service Manager, Assistant Director, or Director.
(13) Maintain a positive attitude and assist the child with presenting a positive profile in the community
(14) In the event of an emergency, provide protection to the individual, which may include administering first aid or CPR and telephoning 911.
NOTE: This job description shall apply to full-time, part-time and substitute Instructional Companions.
