An opportunity is currently available for a Part-Time/Full Time Instructional Companion: Qualifications: At least an A.A. degree or equivalent in psychology, education or related field, or training and/or education in implementing one-to-one discrete trial instruction to children challenged with autism, or one year of training and experience in providing discrete trial instruction in a one-to-one setting to children challenged with autism required.
Requirements: Valid Driver’s license; current automobile insurance; DMV report; first aid training; CPR training; TB clearance; fingerprint clearance through the California DOJ and the FBI. Staff must be physically able to implement all strategies as they are defined in IABA’s “Emergency Management Guidelines,” including geographical and emergency physical containment.
Staff must be able to physically lift and carry up to 20-pound items (e.g., groceries, houseware items, move furniture). As well as be able to physically assist, guide, and facilitate movement of consumers that may need physical assistance (e.g., wheelchair transfer, walking, etc.).
Training: The Senior Instructional Companion will be expected to participate in approximately 90 hours of required training. The training will be completed during the first six months of employment. Training requirements include: Competency-based training, on-the-job field training, and other training provided by the professional staff of IABA and/or professionals outside the agency.
Goal: To oversee the daily activities of the child's instructional team as specified by the Service Manager or Supervisor. Provide one-to-one behavioral-based instruction in the home, school and community to children within the autism spectrum to assist them to develop the skills necessary to be integrated into school and other community settings.
Responsibilities: The primary responsibility of the Senior Instructional Companion is to implement the intervention procedures specified by the Service Manager or supervisor and oversee the day-to day activities of the instructional team. Responsibilities include analyzing the preparing summaries of data, providing one-to-one instruction hours, contributing to the design of goals and objectives, updating the service notebook, coordinating the child's weekly schedule and assisting in training less experienced staff members. Hours of work will be based on the child's intervention schedule.
Job Duties: Job duties will be as follows:
(1) Conduct scheduled one one-to-one behavioral-based instruction sessions, implementing the Individual Service Plan under the supervision of the Service Manager and/or Supervisor
(2) Introduce and probe items/targets, as appropriate and according to the written protocol
(3) Keep accurate records of child’s progress and behavioral difficulties for each session conducted
(4) Review instructional companions entries in service notebook
(5) Relate observations and suggestions to Supervisor, or Service Manager
(6) Maintain Service Notebook in a clear, up-to-date, and organized manner
(7) Prepare update of progress and difficulties for Service manager and/or Supervisor for instructional team meetings.
(8) Assist in leading weekly/bi-weekly instructional team meetings at office or child’s home
(9) Prepare instructional team meeting notes and disseminate to Manager and to service notebook according to established timelines
(10)Assist in training less experienced Instructional Companions on child's team in behavioral tecchniques, intervention techniques, and professionalism
(11) Provide Service Manager and or Supervisor with information regarding less experienced Instructional Companion's performance
(12) Ensure intervention materials are maintained at the home and office in an organized manner
(13) Assist with intervention material generation, as requested
(14) Relay parental/guardian concerns or questions to Supervisor, Service Manager, Assistant Director, or Director
(15) Prepare weekly schedule of intervention hours, in accordance with number of contracted hours(16) Ensure all hours are fulfilled, including scheduling substitutes or rescheduling of hours
(17) Keep parents and Service Manager and/or Supervisor updated regarding scheduled inervention hours
(18) Prepare special incident reports as necessary
(19) Prepare quarterly report of progress in a timely manner during month following end of quarter according to established timelines
(20) Submit summary of monthly service hours and accompanying sign in sheets according to established timeline
(21) Maintain a positive attitude, be a good role model and assist the child with presenting a positive profile in the community
(22) In the event of an emergency, provide protection to the individual, which may include administering first aid or CPR and telephoning 911.
NOTE: This job description shall apply to full-time, part-time and substitute Senior Instructional Companions.
